How to obtain prepaid credit
NOTE: Our Prepaid Metering system is privately owned and privately managed. Prepaid Credit is therefore only available from the owner or manager of the Prepaid Meter. It is not possible to purchase credit for our meters from the same points of sale used for purchasing municiple utilities credit.

Meters are setup with a credit limit. This may be any value set by the person or company responsible for managing the meter.

If you are working in prepaid mode, then the credit limit will have been set to "0". Before a credit token can be issued, funds must be deposited into the nominated bank account of the person or company responsible for the meter and then credited to the meter.

Only once the funds are credited to the meter can a 20 digit credit token can be obtained via SMS.

When the meter is in credit the system will only issue tokens to the value of the credit available. For example: If the available credit is R50 and a credit token is requested for R70, a token to the value of R50 will be issued.

A credit token may be obtained for any amount equal to or lower than the available credit. For example: If R500 was credited to the meter, a credit token for R200 can be requested. The remaining credit will be R300. This balance can be requested in whole or in smaller amounts as required.

The meter will only dispense electricity up to the value of the credit tokens requested and then manually entered via the key pad. The meter will stop dispensing electricity when the kwh value of the tokens entered is consumed and will not dispense further until such time as another credit token number is entered.

NOTE: Credit tokens can only be used once and cannot be used for any meter other than the one for which it was requested.
  1. Transfer funds into the bank account nominated by the person or company responsible for managing the meter. If you are a tenant living in a property where the landlord or property manager has outsourced the utility revenue collection management to Prepaid Meters, then you can obtain credit via the Prepaid Meters Tenant Payment System .

  2. Once you have obtained credit. Request a credit token .

  3. Enter the credit token into the meter using the key pad.

  4. Check meter on screen display regularly and ensure you have enough credit available to request additional credit tokens if required.

TIPS
  • To avoid being left without credit and possibly no electricity, make fund payments for credit with enough time to account for transfers between banks, weekends and other unforeseen delays.
  • Pay funds using Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) to avoid cash handling charges being deducted.
  • Use Internet Banking to pay funds, it is cheaper and then possible to send payment notification using SMS or email services.
